The Advantages of Art Therapy

Many people ask me, why art therapy? Usually after the question, what is art therapy? Well, I am here to answer a few of your questions. What I try to emphasize to people more than anything is that the focus of art therapy is the process of making art and not the final product. This means that art therapy is for everyone, you do not have to be a “good artist” to participate.

A part of therapy may include setting goals, figuring out what you want to accomplish and how. Art is a wonderful way to visualize the steps it will take to reach your goals. It is one step further than saying it out loud because you can begin to envision yourself in action.

When we make art whether it is a collage, sculpture, painting, or writing a poem we are activating the whole brain. With a trained art therapist and counselor at your side it is possible to release physical and emotional feelings that may have been stuck in your body.

Another great thing about art therapy is that there is no need to use words, people are invited to share only what they want through art. Everyone expresses themselves differently and it is important to me to honor each of those ways.

Art making brings joy! Not everything about therapy is hard, it is healing to laugh, to make art about gratitude and love, and to have fun doing it. I could write forever about the benefits of art therapy, if you would like any more information or have questions please feel free to contact me or visit the website below.
